Montessori Classroom News February 28, 2018

Pennies for Peace
We read the true story “Listen to the Wind” about the kind villagers in the mountains of Asia (Pakistan) who saved the life of “Dr. Greg,” an American hiker who had gotten lost and was sick and hungry. In thanks, he promised to return to help the village build a school. He started Pennies for Peace, an organization that continues to help build schools and provide materials and teacher training so that children can have an education and better life.

Our class is excited to join this effort by collecting pennies (and other coins) starting now, through Thursday April 12th. Your child will bring home a container to collect pennies in. They can choose to keep the container at home until the end of the project or bring it in more often to add their coins to the class jar. See attached letter for more information.

Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!
March 2nd, the birthday of well-known children’s author Dr. Seuss, is Read Across America day. We will celebrate in our classroom by reading a book by Dr. Seuss. Join the nationwide celebration with your family by making some special time for reading this weekend!
After finding the North Pole on the globe and discussing how it is such a strong magnet that it pulls other magnets toward it, we floated a bar magnet in a basin of water to make our own compass and discover which direction would be north in our classroom. The activity is now on the Physical & Earth Science shelf for the children to explore independently
